1990-08-18 Jose Ruiz w rsc 8 Wilfredo Vargas, Pachin Vicens Coliseum, Ponce, Puerto Rico - WBO. Referee: Israel Quinones-Falu. Although Ruiz (115) scored a first-round knockdown he had to remain patient as Vargas (115) made it difficult, his two-fisted attacks never allowing the champion to relax for long. Also cut over the right eye, Ruiz, fighting in spurts in order not to worsen the injury, picked his moment which came when Vargas began to tire badly. Coming on strong in the eighth, Ruiz forced the stoppage with two minutes and ten seconds of the session remaining as Vargas failed to fight back.
