1991-02-23 Gilbert Dele w rsc 7 Carlos Elliott, Football Stadium, Point A Pitre, Guadeloupe - WBA. Referee: Isidro Rodriguez. Contested for the vacant title after Julian Jackson had abdicated, Dele (153¼) dominated proceedings from the start with the jab before opening up with right hands in the third round to drop Elliott (152½) twice. Although the Japanese-based Elliott came back well in the fifth with solid left hooks he was unable to make up any leeway and before too long his right eye began to close. From thereon the American was more often than not reduced to clinching. Having battered away at Elliott throughout the sixth, Dele’s punches had a dramatic effect in the seventh when heavy rights sent the latter to his knees, whereupon the referee stopped the contest on the 1.48 mark. It was later disclosed that Elliott’s jaw had been fractured in two places.
