1991-02-23 Greg Haugen w pts 12 Hector Camacho, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Scorecards: 114-113, 114-112, 112-114. After coming to the weigh-in four pounds over the weight and having to run it off, the champion initially allowed Haugen (139) to make the running and failed to get close enough to make his punches count. However, by the third, Camacho (140) was looking good with darting southpaw jabs and straight lefts finding the target and it was no surprise when a right hook to the jaw put Haugen down for the first time in his career. This was Camacho’s big chance, but he failed to take full advantage and by the seventh was beginning to tire. The fight was still close going into the tenth and while Camacho had his speed and adroitness, Haugen was landing solid body shots in an effort to slow his man down. Coming out for the final round, when Haugen refused to shake hands with Camacho and the latter then fired three punches over the referee’s shoulder he was deducted a point. At the final bell, although Haugen’s aggression had given him the last round it was still something of a shock when he was handed the title and Camacho was shorn of his unbeaten record, as the latter had appeared to have done enough in the eyes of many good judges. Haugen forfeited the WBO title in March when showing up positive for marijuana and failing a post-fight drug test.
