1991-04-01 Mike McCallum w pts 12 Sumbu Kalambay, Louis 11 Stadium, Monte Carlo, Monaco - WBA. Referee: John Coyle. Scorecards: 116-114, 116-115, 114-115. In what was a very close contest the champion was ahead after six rounds, scoring well with solid combinations, before Kalambay (159½) picked up the pace to come back very strongly in the second half. It was probably the 11th that settled it for McCallum (159½) when he scored heavily, but Kalambay was always a threat, especially with the left hand.

McCallum forfeited WBA recognition in December when failing to sign for a defence against his mandadory challenger, Steve Collins, and then challenging James Toney for the IBF version of the title. Following that, Collins and Reggie Johnson were matched to find a successor.
