1991-05-18 Hector Camacho w pts 12 Greg Haugen, Sparks Convention Centre, Reno, Nevada, USA - WBO
1991-05-18 Hector Camacho w pts 12 Greg Haugen, Sparks Convention Centre, Reno, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Bobby Ferrara. Scorecards: 115-112, 114-113, 112-115. Billed for the vacant title after Haugen (139) had been stripped following his championship win over Camacho (138½) on 23 February, this time round the latter made sure of victory when getting off to a good start, while the man from Las Vegas never really came to terms with what he had to do until it was too late. It was not until the eighth when Camacho began to tire that Haugen got himself going and it was noticeable that body punches would be his best form of attack, especially when the former kept complaining about them. From hereon, Camacho, clutching for dear life at times, was under constant pressure, but try as he might Haugen was unable to remove him and at the final bell it would be down to the judges. Having had a point deducted for slapping Haugen after the bell to end the 11th, Camacho jumped out of the ring at the end of the fight obviously thinking that he’d lost and had to be recalled on the announcement of the verdict.
Camacho forfeited the WBO version of the title in March 1992 after failing to comply with the WBO’s terms and conditions.
