1991-05-24 [[Jesse Benavides]] w pts 12 [[Orlando Fernandez]], Memorial Coliseum, Corpus Christi, Texas, USA - WBO. Referee: Robert Gonzalez. Scorecards: 118-110, 117-111, 118-114. Making his first defence, Fernandez (120¼) was far too wild to be that effective and while very strong at the weight he was unable to make his added power pay off, apart from working the kidneys and occasionally landing low blows. Although Benavides (121¾) was faster and more accurate he was undermined by the champion’s power and roughness, being given a two-minute break after being hit low in the ninth. However, Benavides came back well from long range, scoring points with a southpaw jab, and despite being roughed up when close he did enough to convince the judges.
