1991-06-28 Joey Gamache w rsc 10 Jerry Ngobeni, The Raceway, Lewiston, Maine, USA -WBA. Referee: Waldemar Schmidt. Fighting to decide the WBA version of the championship after Brian Mitchell had relinquished, Gamache (130) started sluggishly as Ngobeni (130) confidently attacked the body. At the halfway point Gamache was behind, but sticking to his counter-punching plan he started to get on top, and in the ninth he floored the South African with a cracking left hook to the head followed by a right to the ribs. At 2.28 of the tenth it was all over when the referee decided that Ngobeni was in no fit state to continue. Although back on his feet, Ngobeni had been put down heavily by a series of solid punches and was still dazed.

When Gamache relinquished the WBA version of the title in October due to difficulty in making the weight, Genaro Hernandez and Daniel Londas were matched to find a new champion.
