1991-10-03 Vinny Pazienza w rsc 12 Gilbert Dele, Civic Centre, Providence, Rhode Island, USA - WBA. Referee: Luis Rivera. Considered by many to be over the hill, the battle-scarred Pazienza (154) proved his critics wrong when taking the title from the fancied Dele (154), who was found to be wanting despite having an 11-inch reach advantage. Darting in and out with fast jabs and thumping body shots, Pazienza bewildered Dele at times and while the champion always tried to fight back he was being outsped at every turn. Although the doctor had a close look at Dele before the tenth got underway he was allowed to continue, but in the 12th, having turned away from Pazienza and claimed that he’d been thumbed in the eye, the referee stopped the fight. There were just 50 seconds of the contest remaining, but it was clear that Dele had lost heart and had given up fighting. Pazienza relinquished the WBA version of the title in October 1992 when an injury stopped him from defending inside the stipulated deadline.
