Extremely competitive, Perez (121¾) started well with double jabs and a variety of blows to head and body, but showing his counter-punching skills by the seventh round the champion was punishing his rival to the body. Coming down the stretch it was toe-to-toe as both looked for supremacy, but it was the fury of Perez which ultimately prevailed over the skilled Mendoza (121½).
