1992-06-27 [[Chris Eubank]] w pts 12 [[Ron Essett]], Quinto Do Lago Hotel, Quinta Do Lago, Portugal - WBO. Referee: Roberto Ramirez. Scorecards: 117-112, 117-113, 118-110. Once again the champion was unable to close down a negative opponent, allowing the light-hitting Essett (166) to score with flicking jabs and remain in the fight when boxing in a haphazard fashion. Occasionally Eubank (168) scored heavily, but was unable to set the American up for a finishing blow. By the seventh session it was clear that Eubank needed to up the pace and he began to put in more effort, hurting Essett and putting him down in the eighth. It should have incurred a count but the referee ruled it a slip and Eubank was unable to improve on that despite having his man in trouble up against the ropes in the ninth. Although Eubank won by a unanimous decision there were many who thought that the contest was closer than scored.
