1992-06-27 Wilfredo Vazquez w pts 12 Freddy Cruz, Sports Palace, Gorle, Italy - WBA. Referee: Andres Lapuente. Scorecards: 117-111, 115-114, 115-114. In what was generally agreed to have been a close contest, one of the judges, Carol Polis of America, upset the crowd and the challenger by her scorecard. There was no doubt that the fight was decided, certainly by two of the judges, in round four after Cruz (120¾) took a count on being hit by a succession of punches to his neck from the champion, which the referee should have deemed illegal. Pushed to the limit, Vazquez (122) was unable subdue the tough Cruz who gave him all the trouble he could muster.
