1992-07-18 [[Pernell Whitaker]] w pts 12 [[Rafael Pineda]], Mirage Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 116-110, 117-108, 117-108. Spending much of the fight chasing the shadow that was Whitaker (140), the champion had few opportunities to land his heavy punches and was comprehensively outboxed by the fleet-footed southpaw. Bobbing and weaving in front of Pineda (139), Whitaker continually fired in the jab whilst avoiding most of the blows that came his way and in the sixth he dropped the champion with a solid right hook to the ribs. Towards the end of the bout, with Whitaker taking it easy, Pineda staged something of a rally but by then only a knockout would have been enough and there was little chance of that happening.
