1992-09-18 Orlando Canizales w pts 12 Samuel Duran, Breeden Fieldhouse, Bozeman, Montana, USA - IBF. Referee: Denny Nelson. Scorecards: 118-110, 118-110, 116-112. Defending his IBF bantamweight title for a record tenth time, surpassing Carlos Zarate’s total, Canizales (117½) had to go the full 12 rounds to overcome Duran (117¾), who proved to be a tough little fighter. Although Canizales controlled the fight with the left jab, Duran was always dangerous with flurries of blows causing damage to the champion’s features, including bumps and lumps on his forehead and cuts under the eyes. There were no knockdowns, and while Canizales was credited with all but two rounds by two judges that did not give a clear picture of the problems he encountered. The Bozeman Daily Chronicle had Canizales saying after the fight: “I have to give Duran a lot of credit. He knew I was a counter puncher and he was countering me too. I felt I hurt him a couple of times, but he was very determined and always fought back”.
