1992-10-03 Nigel Benn w rtd 3 Mauro Galvano, Ice Palace, Marino, Italy - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. In action straight from the opening bell, having realised that it might be fatal going to the scorecards in Italy, Benn (167½) caught the champion with several cracking rights to the head to have the latter holding on at the bell. Picking it up again in the second, Benn landed several hard rights, one of them opening a cut on Galvano’s left eye, and although being consistently held he continued to stalk the Italian. The third round was much the same, with Benn landing solidly, before he was bundled through the ropes more by pushing than being hurt by lefts and rights thrown by Galvano (168). At the end of the third, with Galvano’s eye damage having worsened, his corner pulled him out of the fight and tried to claim that the cut had been caused by a head butt and not a punch. Overruled by the referee, who saw it as a third-round retirement, even if it had gone to the cards Benn would have won the title on a technical decision as all three judges had him in front at the time.
