1992-10-31 Crisanto Espana w rsc 8 Meldrick Taylor, Exhibition Centre, Earls Court, London, England - WBA. Referee: John Coyle. Coming off a four-round loss to Terry Norris in a battle for the WBC junior middleweight title was not the greatest of performances, and Taylor (146½) hardly looked like the man he once was when defending his welterweight crown against Espana (147). Although he started quite well with the jab, from the second round onwards he found himself unable to get inside Espana’s longer reach without being caught and was soon taking left hooks and right hands. By the fourth, Taylor was not moving with any confidence, but he began to have a bit more success until taking time out after being dropped by a low blow in the sixth and then coming under fire for the remainder of the session. Now cut under the right eye and stiff legged, Taylor was tagged heavily throughout the seventh before being dropped by a right hand - left uppercut combination in the eighth. Taylor was rescued by the referee on the 2.11 mark after getting up and running into a battery of punches that left him defenceless.
