1992-12-12 Nigel Benn w rsc 11 Nicky Piper, Alexandra Pavilion, Muswell Hill, London, England - WBC. Referee: Larry O’Connell. Putting up a tremendous display of guts and boxing ability, Piper (167) took the champion into the final stages of the contest and was even ahead on one of the judges’ cards when the referee stopped the fight at 1.44 of the 11th round to save him from taking further punishment. Stalking his man throughout, Benn (167) landed the heavier punches, but was often picked off by the jab when standing back to admire his work. Finally, in the 11th, Benn made his harder punching pay off when a wide left hook dropped Piper for ‘nine’ and after the latter had been subjected a series of left hooks and right uppercuts without fighting back the referee had seen enough.
