As in their first contest cuts again played a big part in the way things went, with the challenger taking over in the sixth round after Medina (125¼) had been bloodied by repeated right hands to the face. Continuing to dominate, Johnson (125¾) decked Medina, who was virtually done in at this stage, with a right to the jaw in the 11th and following the ‘eight’ count carried on picking his punches to land the decision. On 11 September, Johnson outpointed Bebis Rojas at the Jai-Alai, Miami, Florida, USA in what was meant to be a title defence. Unfortunately, Rojas, who took the fight at short notice, came to the ring at 129¾ and thus nulified the contest as a championship fight. Johnson (125½) was too busy and too quick for Rojas, despite being hurt in the third and cut on the head by an accidental butt in the sixth, and controlled the bout with his jab and two-fisted attacks to record an easy victory.
