1993-03-06 Nigel Benn w pts 12 Mauro Galvano, Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland - WBC. Referee: Tony Perez. Scorecards: 118-114, 117-113, 118-112. Putting his title up against the man he won it from, Benn (167¾) was given a much harder time than he might have anticipated, being forced to travel the full distance and having to shake off a tremendous short right to the head immediately prior to the final bell. If the punch had landed a minute or so earlier the result could have been very different. The fight had begun with the referee calling ‘break’ 20 times in the opening three minutes, making it clear that Galvano (167¾) had come to survive and his clutching tactics throughout made it difficult for Benn to attain any kind of rhythm. It was not one of Benn’s better performances, as his punching was often ineffectual, but he was the one making the fight even if he could not find a way through the Italian’s defences for much of the time.
