1993-03-24 [[Rafael Del Valle]] w rsc 5 [[Wilfredo Vargas]], Caribe Hilton Hotel, Condado, Puerto Rico - WBO. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Making an aggressive start, Vargas (118) took the fight to the champion in the opening two rounds, but was unable to sustain his charge. Having initially been content to circle and counter Del Valle (117½) picked up the pace in the third session, and early into the fifth Vargas, cut over both eyes, was ready to go. After being staggered by a straight right to the head, the challenger was dropped for ‘eight’ from a flurry of blows, and on getting to his feet was quickly cornered and put down again. This time the referee had seen enough, calling a halt with 1.01 of the round remaining.
