1993-04-24 Julio Cesar Vasquez w pts 12 Javier Castillejo, Ermita Retirement Park, Leganes, Madrid, Spain - WBA. Referee: John Coyle. Scorecards: 114-113, 115-114, 120-115. In what turned out to be a gruelling affair, with both men exchanging heavy punches at times, Vasquez (153) held off the challenge of Castillejo (152) to retain his title. Although Castillejo started well and had the southpaw champion under some pressure early on he was unable find a finishing blow and was put down himself in the sixth round. From thereon Vasquez just about held the upper hand, but it was too close for comfort as the fight swung first one way and then the other.
