1993-08-13 Miguel Angel Gonzalez w pts 12 David Sample, The Arena, Guadalajara, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Juan Carlos Guzman. Scorecards: 116-112, 116-111, 120-110. Although hurt by a hard overarm southpaw left seconds into the bout the champion came through the fog to eventually outbox and outpunch Sample (134¾), who was a difficult customer to handle as he moved in-and-out at some speed. By the sixth round Gonzalez (135) had got on top and was working behind the jab as he looked to land a finisher while Sample, having taken some heavy shots to head and body, was no longer relishing the battle. From there on in it was a matter of whether the crafty Sample could hold out. And although Sample was raked by heavy blows in virtually every session by backing up and circling away from Gonzalez’s power-laden fists, despite being a battered and forlorn figure, he made it to the final bell.
