1993-09-24 Giovanni Parisi w pts 12 Antonio Rivera, Sports Palace, Rome, Italy - WBO. Referee: Tony Orlando. Scorecards: 116-112, 116-113, 115-113. Making his second defence, against the man who had handed him his only defeat as a professional when knocking him out in November 1990, it became an uphill battle for Parisi (134½) after he badly damaged his right hand in the third. Despite being handicapped, according to the scorecards Parisi lost only four rounds and although it was tough going he made himself a difficult target against the heavy hitting Rivera (134½), with his movement and solid jabbing keeping the latter at bay for much of the time. Rivera was always dangerous and scored heavily on occasion but was unable to set Parisi up with killer blows. Following the fight, Parisi stated that he would be looking to make a match with Julio Cesar Chavez up at light-welter and having passed the six-month defence deadline the WBO vacated the title in April 1994.
