1993-10-16 Eamonn Loughran w pts 12 Lorenzo Smith, King’s Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland - WBO. Referee: Knud Jensen. Scorecards: 118-110, 116-112, 117-112. Having been preparing to challenge Gert Bo Jacobsen, when the latter was taken ill and relinquished the title Loughran found himself meeting Smith, who had been hastily drafted in. With the fight now involving the vacant title, and Loughran (146) forcing the issue all the way, as early as the opening session a clash of heads saw Smith cut on the right eye. The story of the fight was almost the same round after round; Loughran continually advancing, hooking to the body before going for the head, with Smith (146½) jabbing away with the left and countering with right crosses. It was in the latter stages that Loughran’s strength really told, and he made a sustained effort in the 12th when catching Smith again and again to make sure of the decision. Although Loughran was warned on more than one occasion to keep his punches up and was lucky not to have had points deducted he fully deserved the win.
