1993-11-27 Miguel Angel Gonzalez w rsc 11 Wilfrido Rocha, The Arena, Mexico City, Mexico - WBC. Referee: Simon J. De Lima. Coming out in a positive fashion, the champion quickly showed his intent when dropping Rocha (134¾) with a left-right in the first round and he kept up the pressure in the second when handing out a steady beating. Despite that, Rocha continued to walk on to lefts and rights as Gonzalez (135) mixed his punches up well and although the latter’s right hand was badly bruised in the sixth there was no let-up. Still dominating the action, Gonzalez again floored Rocha in the eighth, but it was not until 12 seconds of the 11th had elapsed that the referee finally called a halt when it became obvious that the fight was over.
Rated third by the WBC and seventh by The Ring magazine, Jean-Baptiste Mendy would be Gonzalez’s next challenger. With 45 wins in 52 fights, Mendy was an experienced campaigner who had beaten Edgar Castro and Danilo Cabrera and had given up the European title to take on Gonzalez. A durable fighter who had lost just twice inside the distance, he was also a portsider.
