1993-12-04 Kevin Kelley w pts 12 Gregorio Vargas, Sparks Convention Centre, Reno, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 115-112, 116-111, 115-112. Throwing lots of effective punches, the challenger proved to be just that bit quicker than Vargas (126), his southpaw jab and movement being the main difference between the two men. Although building up a good lead, Kelley (125) began to get pinned back as Vargas launched his big offensive in the seventh, pasting his man about the body, but in the eighth Vargas’ right eye was closing fast and he looked dispirited. However, Vargas was not finished by a long chalk and with about a minute left in the ninth he dropped Kelley for ‘eight’ with a terrific short right counter. There were those who thought the tide had turned, but the Mexican was unable to sustain the pressure and Kelley boxed his way to victory.
