1993-12-17 Juan Martin Coggi w rsc 7 Eder Gonzalez, Villa Lujan Defenders Club Arena, Tucuman, Argentina - WBA. Referee: Isidoro Rodriguez. In what was surely the most controversial fight of the year, after both men had sized each other up in the first Coggi (139¾) was the first to strike when he dropped the challenger with a right hook in the second. Getting to his feet, Gonzalez (139¾) smashed home a tremendous right to the southpaw champion’s jaw, which sent him crashing to the floor, whereupon the referee appeared to issue a count that lasted about 15 seconds. Up at ‘nine’, Coggi was all over the place as Gonzalez laid into him and when the referee came between the two fighters on the 2.26 mark, saying later that he thought he heard the bell, the round ended 35 seconds early. Even then Coggi remained weak for the next two or three sessions prior to being dropped again. This time the referee called it a slip. By now Gonzalez was tiring from his exertions and with Coggi fully recovered the Colombian was put down by a strong left in the seventh before clambering up and taking more blows. The fight was stopped when his manager got into the ring to stop him from taking more punches. Five days later the WBA took away the referee’s license and ordered an immediate rematch.
