1994-02-26 Nigel Benn w pts 12 Henry Wharton, Exhibition Centre, Earls Court, London, England - WBC. Referee: Tony Perez. Scorecards: 115-113, 116-114, 117-112. After doing little work during the opening three rounds the unbeaten challenger gave himself a mountain to climb, but by the fifth he was back in the fight when handed a disputed knockdown decision over Benn (168) when it looked more like a push following a left hook. Taking confidence from that, Wharton (167½) came right back at Benn, forcing him to bob and weave to avoid hooks from both hands. By now Benn was boxing an intelligent fight and when he landed a right hook in the eighth, the heaviest punch of the contest thus far, Wharton almost went down. Benn was also conserving his energy and the last four sessions saw him drop the pace as Wharton tried in vain to find a winning punch. Although the margins were close Benn was a clear winner and, at the same time, Wharton could take heart from his worthy performance.
