1994-03-04 Gianfranco Rosi nd 6 Vince Pettway, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Mills Lane. Although this was classified as a technical draw by the IBF after an accidental clash of heads left Rossi (154) with a gaping cut over the left eye 19 seconds into the sixth round and brought the contest to a halt, for our purposes it should be seen as a no decision. Had the sixth round been completed the result would have been determined by the scorecards at that point and Rossi would still have retained his title, being ahead on all three cards by 49-45, 49-45 and 48-46. It was a typical Rosi type of contest, pushing out the jab and holding on whenever Pettway (150) looked dangerous, and in the opening session the latter was counted upon after being pushed to the floor following a left hook. The action then became extremely scrappy and though Pettway hurt Rossi in the third with solid right hands he was doing too little and didn’t look a likely winner when the contest was terminated.
