1994-03-29 Miguel Angel Gonzalez w rsc 5 Jean-Baptiste Mendy, Marcel Cerdan Sports Palace, Levallois-Perret, France - WBC. Referee: Arthur Mercante. With a big advantage in height and reach, for a while it looked as though the southpaw challenger might cause a surprise after he had begun confidently by scoring well with rights to the head. However, it soon became apparent that Gonzalez (135) was merely biding his time and in the second round he opened up with a body attack prior to dropping Mendy (133) with a left-right. Both men looked comfortable in the next two sessions, but in the fifth Mendy suddenly appeared tired as he reacted slowly to punches coming his way and a right uppercut-left hook floored him for the second time. Taking advantage of the mandatory count Mendy came back into the fray, but when a series of left hooks sent him down again the referee counted to ‘eight’ before calling it off on the 2.40 mark.
