1994-04-09 Pernell Whitaker w pts 12 Santos Cardona, The Scope, Norfolk, Virginia, USA - WBC. Referee: Al Rothenberg. Scorecards: 119-109, 119-111, 119-109. Easily winning the battle of the jab, the southpaw champion put on a great display against the very good Cardona (146½) and despite having to take the occasional solid right hand he never once looked like losing his title. Although his left eye began to swell in the sixth, Whitaker (147) kept on pumping in the right leads followed by sharp lefts. At times Cardona seemed lost and by the 11th he was stumbling around the ring. Still the right lead continued to find its mark and at the final bell Cardona was still there bravely doing his best, which unfortunately for him hadn’t been good enough.
