1994-04-21 [[Jake Rodriquez]] w pts 12 [[Ray Oliveira]], Foxwoods Resort, Ledyard, Connecticut, USA - IBF. Referee: Steve Smoger. Scorecards: 115-112, 116-111, 119-108. Making his first defence, the southpaw champion pounded away at the flashy Oliveira (140), hurting him with lefts to the body, before dropping him with an overarm left in the fifth round. From thereon Oliveira was forced to fight on Rodriguez’s terms and although the latter continued to pound away at the body he was unable to force another knockdown and had to settle for the points. Afterwards, Rodriguez (140) stated that, regardless of whom he fought, he would work the body for 12 rounds and if a stoppage came that would be a bonus.
