1994-05-27 Roy Jones w rsc 2 Thomas Tate, MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Richard Steele. Making his first defence, Jones (159) showed his worth when stopping the dangerous Tate (159½) after just 13 seconds of the second round. Although Tate boxed reasonably well in the opening session, despite being hurt by fast lefts and rights, as he tried to find a way in at the start of the second he was sent crashing by a long left hook. Somehow Tate managed to just about beat the count, but when his second jumped on to the ring apron it was over.
Jones vacated the IBF version of the title on 18 November after beating James Toney for the IBF super middleweight crown, following which Bernard Hopkins and Segundo Mercado were matched to find a new middleweight champion.
