1994-06-04 Ike Quartey w rsc 11 Crisanto Espana, Marcel Cerdan Sports Palace, Paris, France - WBA. Referee: Julio Alvarado. Making his third defence, the long-armed Espana (147) made a good start when outscoring Quartey (147), but by the third round the latter had found the range and was beginning to get to the champion. In the fourth Espana was cut on the left eye. It was also noticeable that the Ghanaian was pacing himself, whacking in punches to head and body whenever in range, and by the sixth he was even getting home with the jab. Despite being hurt in the seventh and there being nothing between them, Quartey pressed on and in the 11th he finally got a reward when a batch of heavy punches left Espana shaken up before being given the mandatory count. Following that, Quartey tore into Espana, and when the latter eventually failed to fight back, being defenceless, the referee called a halt just as he slumped to the floor.
