The decision came about after the fight had been called off during the interval when the ringside doctor advised the referee that Johnson was incapable of continuing, and following a consultation with the WBA official in charge it was decided that as the cut had been caused by a punch Chuwatana, a southpaw, should be named as the winner. However, Johnson’s people immediately filed a protest on the grounds that the injury had been caused by a head-butt and that a technical draw should have been declared, thus safeguarding the title. Although Johnson was guaranteed a return, he was soon boxing at a higher weight.
