1994-07-23 Virgil Hill w pts 12 Frank Tate, Civic Centre, Bismark, North Dakota, USA - WBA. Referee: Bernie Soto. Scorecards: 119-108, 119-107, 118-110. In a battle of jabs the champion generally outscored Tate, who probably made the mistake of sticking to his boxing, and in the sixth a solid right had the latter staggering around the ring. The fight should have been over then and there, but Hill failed to take advantage even after Tate had fallen into a corner. Hill’s explanation afterwards was that he needed to conserve his energy against a tough opponent. From the ninth onwards it was all Hill as Tate, marked over both eyes, fell further behind. But even though the champion was totally dominant at this stage of the fight, Tate always fought back when hurt.
