1994-09-24 Oliver McCall w rsc 2 Lennox Lewis, The Arena, Wembley, London, England - WBC. Referee: Lupe Garcia. In what was a huge shock in Britain, Lewis (238) lost his title when stopped by McCall (231¼) 31 seconds into round two. Despite being a big favourite to win, Lewis was hurt in the first session when the pair exchanged heavy rights and he finished with a swelling under the right eye prior to the bell. In the second, having just connected with a long right-left jab, Lewis walked in to McCall with his chin exposed and after missing with a right he was smashed to the floor by crunching left hook. Although Lewis got his feet, when he was stumbling around at the end of the mandatory ‘eight’ count the referee rightly concluded the action. Lewis would eventually get another crack at his old title after beating Lionel Butler, Justin Fortune, Tommy Morrison and Ray Mercer. The Butler contest, which Lewis won by a fifth-round stoppage at the Arco Arena, Sacramento, California on 13 May 1995, was an official WBC title eliminator.
