In making his 16th consecutive defence of the IBF title, and disregarding the contest against Derrick Whiteboy, Canizales (118) finally broke Manuel Ortiz’s divisional record when outscoring Reyes (117¾) by a unanimous decision. However, the champion was given a tough fight by the two-handed, aggressive youngster, who, despite being dropped in the sixth from a chopping right hand and being hurt on a number of occasions, never left Canizales alone and was always in there firing.

Having broken the record, in December Canizales relinquished his crown to move up a weight to challenge Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez for the WBA title, and in order to find a new champion the IBF decreed that Harold Mestre would meet Juvenal Berrio.
