1994-11-09 Verno Phillips w pts 12 Santos Cardona, Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - WBO. Referee: Robert Gonzalez. Scorecards: 114-113, 116-112, 116-110. Shocked in the second round when sent crashing by a left hook to the solar plexus, the champion was on his feet but dazed before being saved by the bell just as Cardona (152½) was ready to get to work on him. Making a good recovery, Phillips (153¾) came out fast for the third, but Cardona was still matching him and it wasn’t until the eighth that the champion began to forge ahead. At the end of the tenth, Phillips was in front, aided by a point deduction suffered by Cardona when going low, and although the last two sessions were tough he just about deserved the decision.
