1994-12-10 Oscar De La Hoya w rsc 9 John Avila, Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA - WBO. Referee: Raul Caiz. Avila (135) made a bright start as he outboxed the champion in the opening round, but from thereon he wasn’t at the races. Despite missing with plenty of shots, by the third De La Hoya (135) was beginning to dominate the smaller man without ever looking likely to force a knockout. Although Avila was cut over the right eye in the fifth he was still not subdued and even caught De La Hoya with a cracking couple of punches at the start of the seventh. By now, however, time was running out for Avila as the injury to his eye worsened and after 1.07 of the ninth he was pulled out by the referee following a discussion with the ringside doctor.
