1994-12-17 Bernard Hopkins drew 12 Segundo Mercado, Ruminahui Coliseum, Quito, Ecuador - IBF. Referee: Sam Williams. Scorecards: 114-111, 114-116, 113-113. In a battle for the vacant title and the first world championship contest in Ecuador’s history, both men gave it everything before the judges decided there would have to be a rematch. Twice on the deck in the third and fifth rounds, but called slips, Hopkins (157) was in trouble in the sixth before unleashing a tremendous left that dropped Mercado (158) for yet another non-count. Coming into the ninth it was difficult to pick a winner, and the high altitude was taking its toll. With Mercado cut on the right eye in the ninth following a clash of heads, the last three sessions were difficult for him as Hopkins tried to take advantage, but the American was unable to do so and a draw was a fair result as neither man deserved to lose.
