1994-12-17 Bernard Hopkins drew 12 Segundo Mercado, Ruminahui Coliseum, Quito, Ecuador - IBF. Referee: Sam Williams. Scorecards: 114-111, 114-116, 113-113. In a battle for the vacant title, and the first world championship contest in Ecuador’s history, both men gave it everything before the judges decided there would have to be a rematch. Down twice, in the third and sixth rounds, but not counted on, Mercado (158) had Hopkins (157) on the floor in the fifth and seventh from solid right-hand shots to the jaw which did count. Coming into the ninth, with the high altitude taking its toll Hopkins had some work to do. When Mercado was cut on the right eye in that session following a clash of heads, the last nine minutes were difficult for him as Hopkins began to make make up the leeway. Although Hopkins finished strongly the draw was a fair result as neither man deserved to lose.
