1995-01-07 Wilfredo Vazquez w pts 12 Orlando Canizales, Freeman Coliseum, San Antonio, Texas, USA - WBA. Referee: Rafael Ramos. Scorecards: 115-113, 116-115, 113-117. A tactical contest from the start, the champion’s reach advantage was the main difference between the pair, but with so many punches being blocked it became a difficult fight to score. Although Canizales (121½), cut on the left eye in the sixth round, was faster and posed various problems Vazquez (122) was marginally more effective, especially with his counterpunching. At the final bell both men thought they had won, it was that close, but the fact that Canizales had several attempts in making the weight and had little success with his power punching obviously counted against him.
