1995-02-03 Verno Phillips w pts 12 Santos Cardona, Bushkill, Pennsylvania, USA - WBO. Referee: Rudy Battle. Scorecards: 116-112, 115-113, 113-115. A mandatory rematch between the pair saw the champion come on strong towards the end to beat the game, non-stop punching Cardona (153) in a fight that had been difficult to score. Cardona was always in front of Phillips (152½), firing in punches from both hands, but so many failed to hit the target as the champion either pulled away or got on the back foot. It was only in the last few rounds that Phillips began to assert himself, despite one judge thinking otherwise, and he did not seem to be able to miss Cardona with thudding right uppercuts in that period. Realising that it was close, Phillips went toe-to-toe with Cardona in the 12th, and although both men landed well it was the champion’s blows that carried the day.
