1995-02-25 Nigel Benn w co 10 Gerald McClellan, Docklands Arena, Millwall, London, England - WBC. Referee: Alfred Asaro. This was one of the great fight nights in Britain, but it also turned out to be one of the saddest when McClellan (165) finished up being taken to hospital to remove a blood clot from the brain.
As a fight it had everything. The hard-hitting McClellan, who had recently vacated the WBC middleweight title, set about the champion with gusto when knocking him out of the ring and cutting his right cheek in the opening session. Almost miraculously Benn (168) came right back in the second with heavy blows to head and body, and although McClellan was still landing the harder single shots neither gave ground. With round after round following the same pattern when a badly tiring Benn was dropped in the eighth it looked to be the end for him. But when he came back with big punches of his own it was McClellan who was down in the ninth, claiming a foul to which the referee told him to box on. Benn, whose face was badly swollen as was McClellan’s, came out at the start of the tenth, and following a right to the head the latter took a count of ‘six’ before being dropped to his knees for the full count at 1.46 of the round. Having walked unaided back to his corner, shortly afterwards McClellan slumped into unconsciousness and was rushed immediately to hospital.
