1995-03-04 Pernell Whitaker w pts 12 Julio Cesar Vasquez, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Orlando. Scorecards: 118-110, 116-110, 118-107. Despite becoming the fourth man in history to win titles at four different weights and despite winning by a big points margin, Whitaker (153¾) didn’t seem to be the fighter of old, having slowed down appreciably. Still he was good enough to beat a fellow southpaw in Vasquez (153¾), who had two points deducted for rabbit punching and was made to measure for his jab. Although Vasquez had a six-inch reach advantage he failed to make it work for him, apart from when he dropped Whitaker in the fourth with a short left uppercut, and he was often reduced to chasing shadows. By the eighth the jabs were really bamboozling Vasquez and while occasionally hurting his man the champion was unable to follow through. Whitaker relinquished the WBA version of the title soon afterwards to concentrate on his WBC welter crown.
