1995-04-29 [[Bernard Hopkins]] w rsc 7 [[Segundo Mercado]], US Air Arena, Landover, Maryland, USA - IBF. Referee: Rudy Battle. In a return fight to decide the vacant IBF title, Hopkins (158) made it third time lucky when he stopped Mercado (160) in the seventh. The fight had begun with the taller Mercado getting away with some low blows, but by the third round Hopkins was landing solid punches that threatened a knockout. Badly dazed in the fourth, fifth and sixth, despite being battered Mercado was still there and although taking a terrific beating in the seventh he remained upright. The fight came to an end on the 1.10 mark when it was obvious that Mercado had little left but his courage and the referee decided he could not allow it to continue.
