1995-05-06 Johnny Tapia tdraw 8 Ricardo Vargas, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Mills Lane. Scorecards: 68-64, 66-66, 66-66. Finding it hard to pin down his speedy challenger, Tapia (115) was forced to chase shadows for much of the time as Vargas (114) sped around the ring, scoring with jabs and a succession of varied blows. However, in the sixth, Tapia got more into it when flooring Vargas for ‘eight’ with a big left hook, but in the next session an accidental head clash saw both men carrying badly cut left eyes. Allowed to carry on temporarily, after the physician advised the referee that Vargas’ eye damage was too bad for him to continue early in round eight the fight went to the scorecards.
