1995-05-06 Oscar De La Hoya w rsc 2 Rafael Ruelas, Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBO/IBF. Referee: Richard Steele. In a contest to decide two titles it was the ‘Golden Boy’ who came through against the IBF champion, Rafael Ruelas (135), when stopping him after 1.43 of the second. Despite making a positive start when charging out in the opening round, Ruelas was soon made to look ordinary as De La Hoya (134½) easily evaded his wild blows before countering from both hands. In the second session it was more of the same until De La Hoya decided to go on the attack, crashing in a tremendous left hook which put Ruelas down for the mandatory count. Back in action, Ruelas was given no respite and was immediately dropped by a right cross, which saw him again take the standard count. Following that, he was driven to the ropes and was taking a hammering from both hands until the referee did the sensible thing and called it off.
De La Hoya relinquished the IBF version of the title in July to concentrate on his WBO championship defences, an action that was followed by [[Philip Holiday[[ and Miguel Julio being matched in an effort to find a new champion.
