30 July Wayne McCullough w pts 12 Yasuei Yakushiji, Aichi Prefectural Gym, Nagoya, Japan - WBC. Referee: Joe Cortez. Scorecards: 118-110, 116-113, 115-116. Both men started fast and initially sustained the pace, the jabs and rights over the top from McCullough (117¾) against the long jab of the champion who tried to hold the centre of the ring and was determined not to be pushed back. As the fight progressed, however, it was noticeable that Yakushiji (118), despite fighting back, was being forced to concede ground more and more and the Irishman appeared to be getting stronger as he sailed through the rounds. Only in the latter stages when cut on the right eye did McCullough slow to any degree, but by then he had done more than enough to become the first Briton to win a world title in Japan.
