1995-11-18 Jacob Matlala w tdec 5 Paul Weir, Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, Scotland - WBO. Referee: Ismael Fernandez. Scorecards: 38-37, 38-37, 38-37. Although he made a positive start, Weir (107¾) was soon under pressure and was being outworked all the way by Matlala (105¼), who on getting inside to work the body rarely relaxed. Dropped without a count in the fifth, the champion was jumped on after getting up and hit with several combinations before a cut appeared over his right eye. There was no doubt that Weir believed the damage was caused by headwork, but although the doctor thought it was okay for him to continue the referee unfortunately misread him and called the fight off after 2.36 of the round had elapsed. With that, the judges’ scorecards were brought in to play in order to decide the winner.
